HPV is very common - it's thought to be the most common sexually transmitted infection in the world, and most people are infected with HPV at some time in their lives. In a few people, HPV can cause abnormal cells which can sometimes lead to cancers, including cervical, vaginal, vulval, anal, head and neck cancers and penile cancers. The HPV vaccine is highly effective: almost all HPV infections that cause abnormal cells and cancer can be prevented by the HPV vaccine. Meanwhile, regular cervical screening allows for any abnormal cells in the cervix to be found and treated long before they become cancer. Awareness-raising about the HPV vaccine and cervical screening is therefore key - and HPV Awareness Day on 4th March is a great time to do that!
