Mō tetūnga - About the role

You will lead a dedicated decisions team ensuring veterans and their whanau receive support in recognition of their service to New Zealand. This is a critical part of the work done by Veterans' Affairs to support veterans and their family members.

Key responsibilities include the following:

  • Providing guidance and support to the team of Decision Officers on complex cases
  • Manage the day-to-day allocation of work and monitoring of workloads
  • Coaching and mentoring the team, ensuring a transparent and consistent approach to decision making, providing effective and efficient resolution of claims
  • Responsibility for team quality assurance and contribute to the development of a quality management framework for decision-making
  • Building and maintaining strong relationships working closely with colleagues in rehabilitation, case management, policy and business services teams, as well as other internal stakeholders and partners

This role is based in the Wellington CBD. Once you have undergone training and are up to speed, there is the option of working from home two days a week.

You are solution-focused and are comfortable using evidence based decision making on the daily. You will have considerable experience in managing the operational requirements of an administrative or business support function ideally within a complex, service driven organisation. You will enjoy handling and resolving challenges, and be enthusiastic about making a difference.

You will also have the following:

  • Excellent leadership capability and experience with the ability to continue the development of a high performing team and achieve high level outcomes for the customer
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to build sustainable professional relationships with internal stakeholders and partners as well as Veterans' Affairs clients
  • Knowledge of decision making policies and practices within a government or social insurance agency and of legislative frameworks
  • A flexible and adaptive attitude to the changing needs of the team, unit and wider organisation
  • Input on improving existing processes
  • Six plus years of relevant experience in decision, social insurance or a related area and a tertiary qualification in health, welfare, law, public policy or a related area and/or equivalent work experience in a similar environment
