Supervision Specialty Areas:Emerging nurse leaders, system leaders, primary health care nurses, nurses in education, policy and management roles, interprofessional supervision. I have a special interest in working with emerging and current system leaders for whom supervision can be especially helpful in a challenging and changing health environment. I also offer career guidance to any practitioner who may want a conversation about different career options and ‘where to from here’. I have been offering career guidance to nurses for many years and can help you consider the wide range of career options for nurses both within and external to the profession as well as education pathways and scopes of practice.

Professional Registration: Registered Nurse

Fees: Free 30-minute initial 'get to know each other' conversation, $125 + GST per hour for professional supervision, $90 + GST for a one-hour career conversation, ongoing career coaching (set of 4 sessions) negotiable.

Introduction:

Tēnā koe, ko Jill Clendon toku ingoa. I’m a registered nurse with some 30 plus years of experience across the health system in leadership, clinical, research, policy and management roles. Previous roles include Acting Chief Nursing Officer at Manatū Hauora, Associate Director of Nursing for Ambulatory Care at Nelson Marlborough Health, and Policy Adviser and Researcher at NZNO. Currently I work as Regional Clinical Director for Primary and Community Care with the Te Whatu Ora Commissioning team in Te Waipounamu 3 days a week, with the rest of my time working casually as an authorised vaccinator and as a professional supervisor and career coach.

I am passionate about supporting nurses and others across our health system achieve their career and personal goals whether inside or outside of the health system. This passion stems from research I have undertaken with clinicians exploring their experiences in the health system and the impact this has on their professional and personal selves, as well as my own personal experiences. Throughout my nursing career I have balanced clinical roles alongside leadership and management roles and family life. We all have busy lives and finding the right balance is essential to well-being. Having a successful career does not mean we need to give up the games we play or compromise our commitment to family.

My supervision practice draws on elements of Davys and Beddoe's (2020) Reflective Learning Model and Webber-Dreadon’s (2020) emerging Kaitiakitanga approach. These models blend Western and Indigenous approaches to supervision providing a safe platform to explore and reflect on the challenges of practice, supporting development of a greater understanding of professional identity, refining and developing knowledge and skills, whether this is at the clinical interface or in a systems leadership role, and supporting wellbeing.

For me, achieving social justice and focusing on equity are core values that drive my practice. I encourage people I work with to consider these elements in their own practice and the implications for whānau. From the outset, I work with you to ensure your needs are being met, that we 'fit' and that we have shared opportunity to actively engage in the supervision process. No matter what level you sit at in the health system, whether a new practitioner, new to a role in management or leadership, or a seasoned pro, ultimately the decisions we make impact on people seeking care in our system. My role as a supervisor is to help you make sense of this, challenge you when you need to be challenged, and support you when you are seeking a way forward.

I am also qualified in career guidance and I draw on elements of this in my supervision practice. I offer separate career conversations and coaching for those interested in this.
